The First Amendment guarantees U.S citizen with basic freedoms such as religion, speech, press, assembly and petition. In the 2010 case between Salazar and Buono, the First Amendment was put on trial in the Supreme Court Justice. The Supreme Court examined whether a religious cross, meant to honor World War I Veterans, violated the Establishment Clause in the First Amendment. Frank Buono, a former preserve employee, filed the lawsuit to get rid of the religious cross in the reserve permanently, stating that it was built on federal land thus creating a sense of favoritism of one religion over another in government. By establishing favoritism towards Christianity the U.S government violated the Establishment Clause. Some of these problems may be physical or mental in nature. With these problems children will begin to show signs of said abuse. Signs may also escalate to be to showing that there may in fact be sexual abuse happening. The sexually abused child may suddenly become afraid of certain places or people, may talk about new secrets with certain adults or adolescents, and may talk of having a new older friend. The child may have money, toys, and other gifts that he or she cannot explain, or say that they came from a new friend. Some children may even refuse to remove their clothing during appropriate times, such as to take a bath. Children may regress to a younger child’s behavior by once again sucking their thumbs, or wetting the bed again when they haven’t done so in years. A child who has been sexual abused may begin to act out inappropriate sexual actions with joys or other objects, such as touching themselves with objects, or using dolls, stuffed animals, or other toys to imitate sexual acts, and others may draw pictures of what has been going on with them. While another child that has been sexually abused he or she may develop new names for their body parts, or start thinking that that their body, and body parts are dirty, or that they are bad. There are some children that will even harm themselves, or disfigure their bodies when they have been sexually abused. Many of these children will become anxious, nervous, some may have mood swings that old include anger, aggressiveness towards parents, siblings, friends, and even their pets. They physical signs of child sexual abuse may be rare, especially to someone who is not trained but do exist. Pain, disconsolation, bleeding, and abnormal discharge in the genitals, anus, and mouth are a few of the physical signs that may be seen. Some children may have frequent pain during urination and bowel movements as well as, wetting and soiling accidents that they have otherwise outgrown. Other physical signs that may be seen, but are more likely to be noticed by a trained professional may be TTS and tears in or around the vaginal or anal openings, or vaginal infections. When an adult or adolescent child sexually abuses a child it breaks that trust that an adult will give them that care that they are supposed to be instilling within that child. Sexual abuse robs children of their childhood and creates a loss of trust, feelings of guilt and self-abusive behavior along with anxiety, depression, aggressive behavior, and poor self-esteem. When it comes to long term effects child sexual abuse can lead to antisocial behavior, deeper depression, identity confusion other serious emotional problems. Adults who have been sexually abused as a child can have difficulty with intimate relationships, and often feel guilt, shame, and self-blame as they become adolescents and adults. Many will take personal responsibility for the abuse, as though they have rough the abuse on to themselves, that they asked to be touched in these wrong ways and because they feel that way they think that they are dirty individuals, because when the abuse is by someone that they know and trust it makes it hard for the child to see the abuser negatively, which makes it may be hard for some children to see that it was the adult who was at fault rather than the child themselves. So they often blame themselves and take on a negative messages about themselves, and intern may display self-destructive behaviors and experience more suicidal ideation than those who have not en abused (Browne Finickier, 1986) Many children grow into adolescents and adulthood having low self-esteem and have body image problems. They see themselves as being dirty or ugly, unhappiness with body or appearance, and eating disorders, some even grow to disfiguring their bodies so that they will no longer look attractive to those that have sexually abused them. Children who were sexually abuse may experience difficulty in establishing interpersonal relationships. Per this model, grievers must accomplish four tasks: #1: Accepting that the loss has really happened#2: Working through the pain of the loss#3: Adjusting to the new environment#4: Maintaining a connection to the lost person/relationship/etc while moving forward with life There are also grief models that attempt to describe grievers. One notable one is the â€Å"grief styles† model by Terry L. Martin and Kenneth J. Doka. This posits that there are three styles of grieving: Intuitive grieving is very outwardly emotional and involves expressing inner emotions in a very visible way. We commonly expect people to grieve this way in our society. This grief style is often stereotyped as the â€Å"feminine† style of grief. Instrumental grieving is less outwardly emotional and more action-based. It often involves doing lots of projects or completing physical or cognitive tasks as a way to process the grief. People may think instrumental grievers are just not â€Å"dealing with† their grief, but they are just addressing it in a different way. This grief style is generally stereotyped as the â€Å"masculine† style of grief. Blended grieving involves a combination of the above styles. The truth is that most people are blended grievers to some extent or another. It’s very important to note that not everyone grieves in the same way or according to a particular set of â€Å"steps† or â€Å"tasks† laid out in a given order. People who are grieving who don’t feel any grief model describes their experience should not feel that anything is wrong with them. Grieving is an incredibly complicated process emotionally, intellectually, physically, and spiritually. Many experts (and grievers) describe grief as a â€Å"roller coaster.† You may be disoriented, exhausted, and confused by all of your (sometimes contradictory) reactions to the loss. You may consider pursuing grief and loss counseling to help you address your feelings of loss. While many grievers do not necessarily need professional help, many find it helpful. Grief is a normal part of life and is not a medical or mental health condition per se. However, it is typically a difficult experience, and a professional can offer valuable support and advice. We can all use some support when we are grieving. What Is Grief Counseling/Grief Therapy? Grief counseling (also called â€Å"grief therapy,† â€Å"bereavement counseling,† and â€Å"grief and loss counseling†) refers to seeing a professional in a one-on-one or small group setting to help you cope with your grief. The overall purpose of grief counseling is to provide support in a nonjudgmental environment as you move through the mourning process. In this section, we’ll discuss what grief counselors can do for you and what typically goes on in a grief counseling session. Note that many people use the terms â€Å"grief counseling† and â€Å"grief therapy† interchangeably, to refer to any session-based grief support. Others draw a slight distinction and use the term â€Å"grief counseling† to refer to session-based grief support offered by people who are not primarily mental health professionals (like pastors or nurses), while using the term â€Å"grief therapy† to refer to grief support services offered by mental health professionals like therapists and psychiatrists. Even with this distinction, in most cases, grief counseling and grief therapy will involve many of the same things. In this article, we’ll mostly use the terms interchangeably. What Can a Grief Counselor Do for You? There are six major things a grief counselor can do for you. Address your feelings: A grief counselor or grief therapist will help you identify, express, and productively manage all of the emotions you are feeling. For example, you may find yourself feeling profound anxiety or experiencing panic attacks; a grief counselor can aid in anxiety management. Identify coping mechanisms and support systems: a good grief counselor will help you identify your personal coping mechanisms and aid you in replacing unhealthy ones (like substance use) with healthy ones (like exercise). They will help you identify support systems and resources in your own life that you can access. Address your particular needs: Grief counselors can also help you deal with grief issues specific to your particular grief situation. For example, if you are a spiritual or religious person, you may find yourself questioning your beliefs or feeling angry with higher powers. A grief counselor can help with your spiritual struggles. Deal with the impacts of the loss: Grief counseling techniques help the griever come to terms not only with the loss itself, but with the impact of the loss. A major loss can change you as a person, so you may also find yourself also mourning your old self in addition to the loss. A loss may also cause a dramatic change in your financial situation or plans. A grief counselor can typically connect you with other resources you may need, like support groups, financial advisors, and so on. In initial sessions, you’ll most likely spend most of the time talking about the loss and how you are managing. Eventually, you’ll probably start doing â€Å"homework† and completing tasks between sessions. Grief counselors often have clients complete exercises in sessions, too. Common grief counseling techniques for both in-session and between-session work include journaling or other writing projects, completing creative projects, reading and discussing relevant books, meditation, yoga, relaxation and mindfulness techniques, and role-playing potentially uncomfortable situations. A grief counselor may also have you fill out grief therapy worksheets. Common grief therapy techniques specifically for bereavement include addressing the deceased person as though they were in the room (the â€Å"empty chair technique†), incorporating possessions or photos of the loved one into sessions, reflecting on the relationship with the deceased, and creating rituals to help commemorate the deceased. Grief counseling sessions for children will usually incorporate play therapy and creative activities to help the child express their feelings. If they are a trained mental health professional, your therapist may also introduce techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT. Grief therapy after a particularly traumatic loss may include EMDR (eye movement desensitization therapy), an evidence-based therapy modality for processing trauma. However, if you feel you would benefit from grief counseling or grief therapy, whatever your circumstances, you should feel free to pursue it. While grief is a normal reaction to a loss, it can still help to have a trained supporter who is not also dealing with the loss to help guide you and support you through the process. Grief counseling may be especially helpful in the following situations: Hidden or misunderstood grief: if you have experienced a loss that is not acknowledged or is considered trivial by others, like the loss of a beloved pet, you may be unable to grieve as openly as you would like. In this case a grief therapist can help you process your grief in a supportive, nonjudgmental environment. Sudden loss: If your loss was very sudden and unexpected, you were not able to prepare yourself for the loss in any way. This means you are at a higher risk of developing complicated grief (see below), or grief that does not abate with time. Grief therapy can help prevent (or manage) complicated grief in this situation. Low social support: Even the most well-meaning collection of friends may not know what to do when you are facing a loss. And while friends and family often mobilize in the first weeks after a sad event, you may find that after the first month or two others have moved on from your loss, while you have not. If you aren’t getting the support you need from your social network, grief therapy can help fill the gap. Family grieving: A death in the immediate family can cause strain in immediate family relationships. This is natural; everyone is grieving the loss differently. Additionally, because everyone is grieving, they may not be able to provide support to the other grievers. In this case, meeting as a family with a bereavement counselor can help family members understand each other’s feelings and reactions and lift strain in the relationship(s). Anniversaries and events: You may experience renewed grief around the holidays, birthdays, and the anniversaries of the loss. If you are struggling during these times, you may wish to see a counselor or therapist for a few sessions. Persistent grief: In general, grief is not considered a mental illness or psychological condition, as it is a normal reaction to a difficult event. However, if severe grief persists for many months (more than about six) without any abatement, you may be experiencing complicated grief or prolonged grief. Significant changes in behavior that persist for more than six months, substance abuse, and a continued preoccupation with loss are signs that grief has become complicated. If you are experiencing complicated grief, you should see a trained mental health professional (like a psychiatrist or therapist) who specializes in providing complicated grief therapy. Complicated grief therapy involves specific grief therapy techniques to help you face the loss and move forward in the grieving process. Additionally, though medication is not typically indicated for non-complicated grief, medication is sometimes useful to help manage complicated grief, which may co-occur with depression or other ps ychological conditions. How to Find the Grief Support That’s Right for You Once you decide that you would like some additional support in your grieving process, there are a variety of considerations for selecting the grief support that’s right for you. We’ll review the three main considerations here: convenience, cost, and fit. The next section (grief counseling resources) will offer you some additional resources for finding grief counselors. Convenience You may think that you’re willing to travel far and wide for the support you need, and when the grief is fresh, this might be true. But as time goes on and your grief becomes less acute, you’ll be frustrated if you choose a grief counselor that is very inconvenient for you to meet with. So try to find someone who is reasonably close to you, and who can meet at times that are realistic for your schedule. If you are in a very remote area where in-person meetings are difficult, you may be able to find a counselor who will meet with via video. There are also online grief support groups that you may find helpful. Cost Cost is usually a factor when selecting a grief counselor. If your insurance covers mental health services, it will typically cover grief counseling with an in-network provider. If it doesn’t, many providers offer a sliding scale. Maybe you're looking for free grief counseling. Additionally, grief support groups are often free, or require only a small per-session cost. Fit There are two main aspects to finding a grief counselor who is a good fit for you. You’ll want to consider who is offering the counseling and the format of the counseling. Many types of professionals provide grief counseling, including members of the clergy, trained nurses, social workers, therapists, and psychiatrists. Additionally, trained volunteers sometimes lead grief support groups. You’ll want to consider who you will be most comfortable with and who can best meet your needs. Think about the following: Would you rather speak with someone you already know, or would you prefer someone you don’t know? Would you be most comfortable with someone with advanced training in offering therapy and mental health services? Then consider a therapist, social worker, or psychiatrist. Suppporting children Essay E1/E2- Five pieces of current legislation are, Children Act 2004, Human Rights Act 2000, UNCRC 1998, Equality Act 2006 and Protection of data act 1999. Children Act 2004 states that the interests of children and young people are better in all considerations of welfare and safeguarding and that safeguarding children is everyones responsibility. This is because safegaurding can only be achieved by building up a range of outcomes for children and young people, which include their health, education and growth and also safety. (0]). This will influence working practice in the setting because the Children Act 2004 makes sure that each setting has policies and procedures, such as multiagencies, this gives children more support within the setting and prevents anything happening to them because lots of agencies come together and work more effectively. Human Rights Act 2000 is all about, having the right to dignity, respect and fairness in the way they are treated. This is to make sure that no setting is able to use corporal punishment even if a parent allows it. This is because it is seen as degrading and breaking the law of Childs Rights. The Human Rights Act means that the parents of children are also pretected. (Penny Tassoni, childcare and education page 115) This will influence working practice in the setting because the Human Rights Act makes sure that no child is felt left out and is resepcted by the practitioner and also is treated fairly throughout there peers, this is because if a child is left out they will feel like they are different and thismakes them feel isolated and unincluded within the setting. UNCRC 1998, this policy was drawn up in 1989 and gives children and young people under the age of 18 years their own special rights. A few of the special rights are, Reinforces the importance of fundermental human dignity, highlights and defends the familys role in childrens lives, seeks respect for children and endorses the principle of non-discrimination (Penny Tassoni, childcare and education page 115). This will influece working practice in the setting because it gives the children there own rights are respect within the setting and allows them to keep there dignity. I have seen this in placement when a child wet themselves but the practitioners did not make a fuss about it so the other children didnt make fun of this child, this is keeping the childs dignity. Equality Act 2006, a key part of this policy is the organization of the commission for equality and human rights. It will plan equality legislation on age, disability and health, gender, race, religion or belief. This policy gives children equal rights no matter what there age, disability etc. This makes the children feel equal and not different to there peers, this is great because it will never make a child feel isolated within the setting and always feel like they have someone to talk to. I have experienced this in my setting because there was a child who was a Jehovah Witness and it was near christmas time so he wasnt able to do any christmas activities or the christmas play so i sat with him and we done lots of different activites together and made him feel like he was included even though the activites were different he still felt as a part of a group. Protection of Data Act 1999, this act set up a register of names of people who are unsuitable to work with children. It needs settings working woth children to make sure they do not offer employment or volunteer work to anyone before they have been tested by the Criminal Records Bureau. I have seen this is my placement where the secetary asked me for my CRB check to make sure i was suitable to work with children and also they always know who the parents or gaurdians are before they let them into the school. Also we have a system which is when a parent or gaurdian is picking up a child from school they have a password which they have to say to the practitioner and only close family or friends will know this password. This makes sure no onespicks up the children who shouldnt be picking them up and this keeps them safe. E3- Describe how the policies and procedures will help safeguard children Policies and procedures will help safe gaurding children because by following the right procedures will keep children safe, some policies and procedure which will keep children safe are, anti-bullying policy, collection by parents/carers, photography policy and safe internet use policy. The anti-bullying policy will keep children safe because if a child gets bullied there is steps the practitioner must take from the policy which will let the children know that bullying is wrong and not kind and that the child will be punished for it. This will then keep other children safe because the other peers will see what happens to the child if he/she bullies another pupil and will not want to do it because they will not want to recieve the punishment which could be, not being allowed to chose at over to you time or not being able to go outside at dinner. This is deffinately an effective method because children love playing outside and being able to be independant and chose what they can do them selves at over to you time. Collection by parents or carers also plays an important role within a setting because if this policy was not set into place then anyone at anytime could pick any chid up from school. This policy makes sure that all children are safe within there setting and cannot be taken from school by anyone random for any reason. The setting will make sure this doesnt happen by mkaing sure that the practitioners know who the parents/carers or they could also have a scheme which is a password scheme, this scheme is put into place to stop anyone from taking the children. This scheme consists of the parent or gaurdian having a password which allows them to pick up there child from school and if a close family member or friend is to pick the child up from school for some reason they will then say the password which wil then notify the practitioner that they know the child and that the parent/gaurdian trusts them. This policy would come under the Data Protection Act 2006. Photography Policy is an important part of a setting as only the practitioners are able to take photos of the children on a school camera for displays and other work which is used within a setting. This is because parents might not want other people to have pictures of their children, practitioners take this very seriously because it is part of Data protection act and schools take it seriously because if they dont the practitioners could loose there job for not following legislation and not be able to work with children again. If any photos are taken on a different camera by parents then they call the parents in and ask them to delete the photos and if they dont the school could take other precausions which would be highly nessessay. It is important to follow this procedure also because it is apart of the Data Protection act aswell. Safe internet use policy is important because this makes sure no practitioners arent watching or viewing anything innapropriate within the setting, because this policy is in place it will keep the children safe because the setting would be made sure that nothing innapropriate would be viewd to the children and that they would be safe throughout there school years. This policy isnt just for the practitioners it is also to make sure that no children or pupils try to search anything innapropriate on the internet. So to prevent this from happening all schools have a fire wall on there computers which stops the practitioners and pupils to open anythinginnapropriate. I think this is a great idea because it keeps all the chidren safe and it is also great in high schools where teenagers try to search silly things, but it stops them. E4- Describe how the policies and procedures promote fair, just and inclusive strategies Policies and procedures promote fair, justice and inclusive strategies. They do this because in a setting all children deserve to be included no matter what there race, religion or disability etc. The disability discrimination act is a good example because all schools should have disability access because it makes dissabled children not feel an individual and makes them feel as part of a group like they are not any different to the other children. Another one would be the Human Rights Act this means that the child has the right to reach their full potential so this means the practitioners push them to make sure that they reach their full potential. They do this by making sure that the classroom has different groups for different abilities, they do this to make sure that each child is pushed to there ability but not too far and also that theyre not given work that is too easy for them. If they are given work that is too easy they will not be pushed to be able to achieve there ultimate best. E5- Two strategies which the setting may use to empower children to develop independance and self-relience. One strategie would be over to you time this is because it gives each child the independence to choose what they would like to do for 40 minutes of the day, i think this is great because it helps the child to grow up and be more independant and help them choose freely what they would like to do, and make choices for themselves. This is also a goos stragagie because if they choose something they like they are more likely to pay an interest in it and have no problem doing it, where as if you gave the children maths to do they wouldnt be as interested but in over to you time they are also still learning something beause they could be on the writing table learning how to write there name, only because they are not taking part in an actual lesson doesnt mean that they are not learning anything because they learn something new everyday. Another strategie would be at dinner time and choosing their own food i think this is good because they can be independant again and choose what they like to eat, this is great because they are only going to chose food which they like which will mean they will eat it all and be strong and healthy, this is good because they also have healthy options which the children also choose. They can also decide when theyd like to have dinners. They dont have to have it everyday just on the days they know they are going to eat the food. They feel independant and all grownup when they can chose there own food because its what there parents do and their parents are there role models and they like to copy them. Being able to chose there own food makes them be self-relient because they can rely on themselves to choose food which they like and will enjoy. B- Discuss how the causes and effects of discrimination may affect practice in the setting In class we talked about Jane Elliot and her descrimination experiment, in her experiment she went to a school setting and split up the blue eyed people from the brown eyed people, she was fair to the blue eyed people and was unfair to the brown eyed people she was fair by praising them and letting them play with things they wanted to play with but for the brown eyed people she was being unfair by making them stand up and squash in into small places, this made the brown eyed people feel uncomfortable and not welcome in the setting. We tried this experiment in our lesson by the blue eyes people being allowed there phones out and able to sit on a chair whereas the brown eyed people werent allowed their phones and they had to stand up or sit on the floor and also the blue eyed people were allowed to talk to their friends and the brown eyed people got told off if they spoke. I was one of the brown eyed people and it made me feel unwelcome and unwanted, I can imagine what it would make children feel like in a setting and I think it would make them not want to go to school. Discrimination is brought on in many different ways, not just because of someones eye colour it is also because of their religion, race, beliefs and if they have a disability A- Feflect on influence of legislation on working practices within early years setting. In the placement setting they have to follow lots of different types of legislation such as the Equality Act 2006, this act gives ALL children equal righs whatever their race, religion, gender and beliefs maybe. Also another important legislation which the school has to follow is the Data Protection act 1998, this makes sure that all practitioners keep confidentiality of each child, this will mean keeping information on all children private and confidential, locked away for no one to be able to get at it, or if it is on a computer or laptop it is password protected and no available for anyone to see. Also it is important to not share or spread any imformation on a child which the parents or child has told you in confidence because then they will loose all trust in you and you will break the confidentiality policy. All of the policies within a setting are influenced by legislations, these legislations are then put into place within the setting to safe gaurd the children and also their families, this will kepp them all safe within the setting. Forexample in my placement we have a coded door at the back which only members of staff know the code to, then also at the from we have a buzzer which leads to reception so the receptionist can look at who is wanting to comeinto the building before letting them in, once she has let them in she asks them who they are and what they are looking for, doing this make sure that no one who shouldnt be in the school doesnt get in witout permission. This is mentioned in the Data Protection act 1998, it is important to follow the policies and procedures and correctly and to take the correct precautions because if you dont you could put a child in serious danger. For example if you think a chid is getting abused at home and you dont tell anyone about it they could be in serious danger, so by taking the right procedures you will be able to talk to the right people and then they will do what is bets for the child. Duties of being a practitioner is to make sure that each child is safe and also feels safe within the setting, I as a practitioner can do this by helping the child in any way and also making sure the classroom is not a danger hazard and that everything is put away correctly so no child will fall, or slip and hurt themselves. Also when the children go outside to play all practitioners have to make sure that the playing yard is safe for children to play on, so making sure there are no sharp objects or fieces on the floor and also making sure that all the gates are shut so no child can wnder off without anyone knowing, this is part of the child protection act 1998 and the health and safety policy in my setting. Also in my placement we have a behaviour policy which states that you are not allowed to use physical punishment on ny child under any circumstances evenif the parent gives you permission too, this is because of the human rights act 200, this legislation states each child have the same rights and is able to keep the same dignity as adults.

(Requiem, page 138) Willy Loman longs for the success of his brother Ben, but refuses to accept the drudgery in the work of his friend, Charley. Essentially, Willy wants the freedom that Ben has – leaving for Alaska on a whim, ending up in the wrong place, and still succeeding on his own – without the responsibility and hard work that Charley puts in to be modestly and stolidly successful. The incongruity in Willy’s wishes – that Willy wants all the glory without any of the guts – leaves him in a place where, truly, he is still a child. And, like a child, Willy could never live like Ben because he needs the security of a job and life like the one Charley has. As the play winds on, Willy cannot wake up from his fantasized version of true American success and, ultimately, allows Miller to illustrate the shallowness of the American Dream. Ben represents success based on the benchmarks Willy has created: that if a man has a good appearance and is well-liked, he will thrive in the business world. Yet, the amount of truth in Ben’s character is questionable.
